Public Tracking Links
Share a customer-facing view of an order or tracker session without giving recipients a chrt account.
A public tracking link is a chrt-hosted page anyone can open with just the URL — no sign-in required. Use it to give customers, end recipients, or anyone outside your chrt org a live view of where a shipment is, without inviting them into your organization.
Before you start
- Public links are scoped to a specific order or a specific tracking session, not to an entire org. Only the segments and tracking layers you enable for sharing are visible on the public page.
- Anyone with the link can view the page. Treat the URL as semi-public — once shared, you should assume it can be forwarded.
1. Share an order publicly
- Open the order at chrt.com/orders/<order-ref>.
- Open the Actions menu in the order header.
- Click Share tracking.
- In the dialog, choose which segments and which tracking layers to expose on the public page, then confirm.
chrt generates a link like https://chrt.com/orders/public/<order-ref>. The
Public tracking indicator appears in the order header to remind you the
order is publicly viewable.
Click Copy link to copy the URL, or use the system Share sheet if your browser supports it.
2. What recipients see
The public page is a stripped-down version of the signed-in order page. It shows:
- The shipment’s current position on the map.
- The layers and segments you enabled when sharing — driver location, cargo location inferred from the driver, and independent tracker-device position.
- A last seen timestamp showing how recently chrt got a ping.
- A layer toggle and history view so the recipient can scrub through past pings, similar to the signed-in map.
Recipients do not see line items, financial details, internal messages, or artifacts unless you’ve explicitly captured those into a shareable PDF (see Tracking for POD generation).
3. Share a standalone tracker session
If the cargo is on a chrt tracker session (not on a chrt order), you can also share the session publicly. From the session page, click Share Public Link and confirm in the Create Public Link dialog. See Standalone trackers for the full session sharing flow.
Once a tracker session is made public, it cannot be made private again. To revoke a public session, delete the session entirely. Orders, by contrast, can be unshared at any time from the Share tracking dialog.
4. Update or revoke a shared order
Open the order, click Actions → Share tracking again, and either:
- Adjust which segments or layers are visible — uncheck the ones you want to hide; the change is immediate.
- Stop sharing entirely — turn off all segments. The public link returns a 404 / no-access state for new visitors.
How to know it worked
- The order header shows the Public tracking indicator.
- Opening the public URL in an incognito window shows the public map.
- A recipient who opens the link can scrub history and see the latest ping.
If something looks different
- Recipient sees a blank or no-data map — confirm at least one segment and one tracking layer is enabled in the Share tracking dialog. The default state immediately after creation may have layers off until you enable them.
- You don’t see Share tracking in Actions — only the org that created the order can generate a public link. Connected forwarders and couriers see the tracking but not the share action.
- Recipient says the link doesn’t work — confirm you’re sharing the
/orders/public/<order-ref>URL, not the signed-in/orders/<order-ref>URL. - Contact hi@chrt.com if you have issues.
